The 2014 Award Winning Military-Inspired Window Treatment
This custom Window Treatment was designed for the Pennsylvania Room at Anderson House, in Washington, D.C., a space with 13 1/2 foot ceilings, and featured a design inspired by the military uniform of Col. Edward Butler, found in a portrait which was placed over the fireplace mantel, after an original in the collection of the Society of the Cincinnati. The embroidered emblem at the center of the window treatment is the Society of the Cincinnati seal, on a field of a medium blue, used in the Cincinnati ribbon which members wear. Fleur de Lis finials are a nod to the French role in securing America's independence. The gold banding on the center pelmet and the drapery side panels were inspired by the leather collar, while large nailheads were used to represent the buttons which held the collar onto the wool coat of Col. Butler and other Revolutionary War officers.

The woven fabric used for the drapery and the crewel embroidered fabric used for the tailored balloon shade, are from Thibaut fabrics. The crewel is also used on upholstery for two Philadelphia style chairs by the fireplace, while the drapery fabric is repeated in the custom quilted bedspread.

“We want you to know how much we appreciate the way you have reviewed the costs for us. Your prep work is so helpful and so beautiful. It makes it hard to make the choices. As we finished up and as I think about the window treatments now, I am so excited about the design and fabric that we picked. I know that I will love it.” – J.W., Herndon, VA

Blinds and Shades
Whether used in combination with other window treatments as seen in the galleries above, or alone, blinds and shades offer control of light, glare, and privacy. They may also add insulation at the windows, and have the potential to contribute decoratively to the room while also meeting the needed functions. Here are some photos which illustrate some of the available choices in blinds and shades.

Motorized Window Treatments
Motorized window treatments are another specialty of Masterworks Window Fashions & Design. Linda is a certified Somfy expert in Somfy's motorized hardware for draperies, blinds and shades, and has other motorized products available as well. Considerations which lend themselves to motorized solutions include concern for child safety with cordless operation, convenience, operation of upper story window treatments without unsightly long cords, and the ability to use technology controls for spaces so that window treatments may be automatically adjusted for varying light conditions or to give the appearance of persons at home, even when traveling.

Shutters
Shutters are custom furniture for your window, and as such are made to fit. They are well suited to every style of interiors, from contemporary to transitional to traditional, and offer sizes from the larger Plantation sizes to the small traditional sizes (suited well in some historic homes in Old Town, Alexandria and Georgetown, Washington, D.C.) At Masterworks, we highly recommend Lafayette shutters, but also have access to Hunter Douglas shutters when desired.

Lafayette shutters are well suited to the summer humidity levels of the National Capitol region, including Northern Virginia, DC, and the Maryland suburbs. The shutter louvers will never stick due to humidity and swelling, as with some other shutters, because a thin plastic cup sits in each louver connection pin hole, separating wood from wood. Besides that advantage, Lafayette ships to us in their own trucks, to minimize the possibility of shipping damage, and look beautiful in place. I have worked with Lafayette for over 15 years and have always been pleased with their customer service. Enjoy these photos, and consider if shutters might enhance your home.
